FSOQ working with Brisbane doctors to supply urgent medical supplies to Sri Lanka

Posted April 20, 2022

The Federation of Sri Lankan Organisations of Queensland has launched an appeal to raise funds to buy and send urgent medical supplies to Sri Lanka.

This follows a discussion the FSOQ had with three Brisbane doctors, Dr Kanchanamala Ranasinghe, Dr Akila Samarakkody and Dr Sisira Goonaratne, who have undertaken the despatch of much-needed medicine and other supplies for the treatment of critically ill patients in Sri Lanka. The country is experiencing a shortage of drugs in the prevailing economic crisis and lack of foreign exchange reserves to pay for the importation of supplies.

The FSOQ was represented by its president Jay Weerawardena, secretary Jayantha Weerasekera, Sidath Wijetunge and Uditha Manage

Dr Weerawardena said the three doctors were working closely with the Doctors Association of Sri Lanka (DASL) and the NRMA (the drug approval authority in SL), and they have identified a list of medicines and other supplies.

“These doctors will lead this fundraiser with our support. Money collected will be paid direct to suppliers and supplies will be distributed by MDS (Medical Supplies Division) of the MOH SL as per a priority list,” Dr Weerawardena said.
