The inaugural meeting of the Sri Lanka Women’s Forum of Queensland was held at the Mt Ommaney Library on Sunday, August 4. The forum is an independent body affiliated with the Federation of Sri Lankan Organisations of Queensland.
Among the attendees were FSOQ president Jay Weerawardena, secretary Jayantha Weerasekera, State MP for Mt Ommaney Jess Pugh, Councillor Sara Hutton, Vietnamese Women’s Federation president Ms Mai Nguyen and FSOQ patron Anton Swan.
Sandhya Abeysekera was elected as the convenor of the committee that includes Sharmila Gamalath, Gothami Meepe, Thilangi Devendra, Prema Weerawardena, Priyangani Unantenna, Upamalika Karunasena, Aruni Arachchige, Ramya Tennekoon Chandrakanthi Wickremasinghe, Sama Adikari, Neranja Alagiyawanna and Lakmini Keerawella.
Objective
The SLWFQ is to bring together Sri Lankan women in Queensland and mobilise their collective strength and sense of unity for their self-development and to engage in projects that will deliver greater value to the broader community.
Key aims
- Provide a platform for social interaction to Sri Lankan Women in Queensland.
- Address issues that hinder the progress of women – health, (physical and mental), career, business education, training, personal development and self-fulfillment.
- Work with FSOQ and member associations on charity projects.
- Organise and engage in activities relating to the primary objective in a variety of areas such as performance arts, advancing culinary skills, youth development, family health, spiritual development in addition to other programs.
- Help disadvantaged groups.
- Work with women’s forums and other ethnic communities.
